Contributing towards this response, the EU Action ‘Resilience to COVID-19 through Digitalisation’ (RESICODI) aimed to mitigate the socio-economic challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. The RESICODI Action was funded by the European Union and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and was jointly implemented through a Team Europe approach by Enabel, focusing on technical and vocational education and training (TVET) and health, and by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), focusing on basic education. Overview of the EU Action ‘RESICODI’ Introducing the BACKUP Initiative under the RESICODI Action | BMZ’s contribution to the RESICODI Action was delivered by the German BACKUP Initiative – Education in Africa (BACKUP Initiative), implemented by GIZ. Under a previous framework and since 2011, the BACKUP Initiative has provided African partner countries with support in the basic education sector via a well-established funding mechanism that supports ministries, national civil society organisations (CSOs) and regional networks. This mechanism was evaluated with outstanding results in an independent evaluation conducted in 2022. With the advent of socio-economic cutbacks in the education sector due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the focus of the Initiative has shifted to improving the continuity and quality of basic education through digital means. Supporting eight African partner countries | The BACKUP Initiative under the RESICODI Action supported eight African partner countries (Botswana, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Madagascar, Malawi, Namibia, Rwanda, and Zambia) to promote and use digital solutions in education through its innovative and demand-based funding mechanism. To ensure alignment with national processes and priorities in education and digitalisation strategies, the BACKUP Initiative under the RESICODI Action offered the opportunity to African partners to implement projects based exclusively on their needs. – 4 –
